Me Made May 2018

I am excited to participate in Me Made May this month!  If you’re not familiar with Me Made May go and check out So Zo’s blog post for more information.

Each person that decides to join in for Me Made May can write their pledge in the comments section of the blog post (mentioned above).  I have enjoyed reading other’s pledges to explore different ways that people are going to participate this year.

I put some thought into my pledge, I wanted to think about where my handmade wardrobe is right now and where I’d like it to be (within this month).  I decided on the following for my personal pledge:  I endeavor to work through my pile of muslins.  I want to decide if I like the pattern and hence make a finished garment from that pattern (or decide that I don’t like the pattern and donate both the muslin and the pattern).  I also endeavor to wear Me Made’s in May and add handmade bottom garments to my wardrobe this month.

I’m starting out this month wearing a new Me Made top.  The top is a v-neck t-shirt with a ruched ballet detail at the neckline.  The pattern that I used for this project was mentioned in this post.  It’s the Basic V-Neck tee by Built by Wendy (from the book, Sew U Homestretch).  This is definitely a tried and true pattern for me.  For this top I enjoy using the ballet ruching instructions from the Agnes Jersey Top pattern by Tilly and the Buttons (another well written and tried and true pattern for me)

The fabric that I used in this pattern is a lovely black cotton lycra knit from Simply by Ti Fabrics.  Oddly enough, of the handmade t-shirts that I’ve made, I have not yet used Cotton Lycra fabric to make them.  This was a funny realization for me as Cotton Lycra is the ubiquitous “t-shirt” fabric.  The fabrics that I have otherwise used are rayon knits, bamboo knits, interlock jersey, and repurposed/recycled shirt fabric.

This project was a fun surprise as I LOVE the feel of the fabric and I know I will get so much wear from this simple and versatile black t-shirt.  I recently donated a couple of other black t-shirts that didn’t fit me well anymore (so adding this new custom fit t-shirt to my wardrobe to replace the old has been so satisfying).

The pants shown in the photos are a commercial pair of capri pants in a soft denim chambray fabric (from Levi’s).  I love wearing these pants in the spring and summer and I want to make handmade versions this month.  I have some lovely stretch chambray coming from Simply by Ti that will help fill this gap in my handmade wardrobe.  More to come soon on this project (along with updates on my pledge goal for #mmmay18).

    1. Thank you so much Crystal! It was so exhilarating to combine two different patterns! It definitely makes me want to find more of my favorite patterns that I can combine in the future.
